Chadelier Drive-Thru Tree, Leggett
 

Leaving the Glass Beach, we continued north on Highway One along the coast, enjoying views like this.

About 20 miles north of Fort Bragg, Highway One vears northeast, leaves the coast and enters the tree-covered coastal mountains.

We drove 25 miles of winding road before coming to the town of Leggett, which marks the intersection of Highway One and Highway 101.

Leggett is also the home of the famous Drive-Thru Tree!  Of course we had to stop at that.

 
   
It costs $15 per car to get into the park to see, and drive through, the Chandelier Tree.  It was worth every penny!  The Drive-Thru Tree is just one of those things you have to do.
   

The Chandelier Tree stands on privately owned property. Charles and Hazel Underwood purchased the grove in 1921.  The opening was cut in the late 1930s to create an attraction for those driving along the Redwood Highway.  In the 1960s they offered visitors lodging amenities which included cabins, a recreation hall, and bar.  The lodging and bar are gone, but there is a well-stocked gift shop (just to the right of the Chandelier Tree).

As the sign says, the three is 2,400 years old.  Diameter 21 feet.  315 feet tall.

A car emerges from the Chadelier Tree.  There are two other drive-thru trees in the Avenue of the Giants area.  We only did this one.  You know, you've driven through one, you've driven through them all.
